A word about Cover Versions
A cover version or cover song, or simply cover, is a new performance or recording of a previously recorded, commercially released song. So if a song was already previously released, what is the scope or the aim of an artist or band to re-release such song? There are a myriad of reasons why bands and artists cover songs.
Some artists cover already released popular songs to play a safe bet when sending their demo tapes to record labels. Instead of sending one of their own songs, they choose to cover a previously popular song. Like this, the band or artist has a better chance or striking a record deal, because the song is definitely going to be loved, since it was already a hit. Fine, a good deal, but let’s face the facts. A lot of people can play instruments and sing, but not everyone can write songs and be an artist. Isn’t this a case of confusing instrument players and singers with real artists? There is an ocean of difference between a person who can write his own music, and a person who plays someone else’s song. If I was a record label scout, I would try to look out for originality and fresh ideas, not recycled music. It’s nice to be green and eco-friendly in almost everything nowadays, but with music it’s not the case.
Some artists do it specifically to get better exposure and establish themselves with the rest. I find it quite unfair, especially when singers who cover a song, storm to success when knowing that 99% of the masses who follow such artists don’t even know that the song is a cover version. Even worse, they don’t even know who the original compositor of the song is. In 2008, Leona Lewis covered Run, originally released by Snow Patrol. Her cover sold over sixty nine thousand copies in the first two days and topped all pop charts for quite some time. In the meantime, Snow Patrol’s original version struggled in the bottom of the charts. Shouldn’t Snow Patrol get more credit, like give the guys a shout each time Leona’s version is aired?
At least, Leona Lewis version is a very good cover, thanks to her soul grabbing voice. There are also a good number of already established artists who recorded good cover versions as well, like The Gathering, Lacuna Coil, Marilyn Manson, Moby, who immaculately covered New Dawn Fades of Joy Division and many others. Unfortunately though, there is also a good number of artists, some of which are well established who get it wrong, and completely destroy a song. Isn’t it better trying to write an original song that fits the genre you like than destroying one? Case in point, The Braids covered Bohemian Rhapsody and ruined it. Bohemian Rhapsody is an anthem, not even a song. As a matter of fact, it has been voted as the best song of the century in a good number of professional surveys. Scissor Sisters did the same with Comfortably Numb, originally released by the great Pink Floyd. It’s true that the world revolves around money, and maybe Pink Floyd, being retired need some extra cash, but why would one even give the rights or license to destroy such a great song? Don’t get me wrong. I got nothing against modern electronic music, I follow it myself. But isn’t it better writing a song that fits in the genre than destroying a rock anthem?
Lately there’s also been a good number of “almost” cover versions released by big artists which made huge success. By almost cover versions I mean that instead of covering complete songs, specific tunes or choruses from an old popular song are mixed and mingled into a dance hit. For example, in the song The time of My Life released by Black Eyed Peas in 2010, the chorus from a 1987 hit song was used, originally named (I’ve had) The time of my Life by Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes. Also in 2010, Yolanda be Cool and Dcup released the song We No Speak Americano, which uses samples from a 1956 Italian song called Tu vuò fà l’americano by Renato Carosone and written by Carosone and Nicola Salerno. Both songs were of huge worldwide success in 2010. Now Jennifer Lopez is gambling through the same path with the song On the Floor, which uses the tunes from the 1984 song Llorando se fue produced by Alberto Maravi.
After all the praising and ranting, I do love cover versions since they generate buzz, and introduce same songs to different music genres. It also helps in reviving the child in some old pensioners!
